Géraldine TOBE was born on 09 February 1992 in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. She lives and works in the same city.
Since 2014 the artist has set out to conquer the spirituality of her ancestors, which is a form of reconciliation and resilience with herself. After being invited by the Royal Museum for Central Africa for a residency on ancestral spiritual identity in 2019 (Esprit des ancêtres), she turned it into a collective project.
Today, the main aim of the ‘Esprit Des Ancêtres’ project is to RECONNECT a whole generation of young African artists with what constitutes the essence of their ancestral culture and spirituality. For too long - and for obvious historical reasons - these African populations have been artificially alienated from these elements of identity, from what we can now call, without restraint, a natural and originally African philosophy.
She is the initiator of the ‘Handicap Mental’ project. An art therapy project with patients in Kinshasa at the Centre-Neuro psycho-pathology psychiatric hospital (University of Kinshasa).
She is the founder of LOBOKO YA SANSA (LOSA Asbl), a platform for socio-cultural projects.
Géraldine TOBE's artistic expression places black smoke at the centre of her work. Smoke is the expression of introspection, of an inner journey. It is the ex-pression of a self
